A NEW SEWING TABLE

Thrift store shopping netted me a new sewing table for $30.00. Well, really it is a desk but I think it will work well for an extra sewing machine station. I have a big sewing cabinet for my Bernina. The first picture shows you a wood filing cabinet. The top of it has two strips of wood along the side that are higher than the cabinet top.
This is the desk top. It folds up. The picture shows the hinged legs and that the top is also hinged.
When you unfold the legs & lock into place, the smaller hinged section of the top locks into the top of the filing cabinet section where the raised strips are. When you don't want the extension part set up, you fold the legs back in and then lower that part. I did not take a picture of that to show you. It goes down to about the size of the filing cabinet itself. There is a second filing cabinet just like the first. I don't know if there originally was another desk top or if someone just had a separate filing cabinet. The extra one will slide underneath the back extension of my big Bernina sewing table. The drawers can hold sewing supplies.
And see what sewing machine I set on top of the new table/desk cabinet.
Ignore the mess around behind the desk. I had to move several crates along the wall so that the desk could be set up. That required some other things to be moved. You know how that goes. I have to get everything organized again. The crates had wool in them and they will go back into the guest room closet where they started out in the first place.

I was working on a patriotic wall size quilt but am abandoning it. The center blocks are composed of string sort of pie shape sections. The instructions said to sew strips onto a fabric backing. It is all just too bulky and way too much with eight pieces coming together into the center. I just wasn't happy with it after making two blocks. The quilt instructions were very vague also. I want to be satisfied with the end product and feel I can do something better. So back to the drawing board.

Have a great day!

Karen

That is a great new sewing station. I wish I could find something like that (and for $30 too!). I am preparing to start to claim some real estate in my daughter's bedroom since she's not at home for much of the year. Your new desk is just what I need.

I love finding a lost treasure and that desk was quite a find! I love how it can become small and then just turn into a regular table. Excellent!

I think that you got an excellent deal for $30.00. I'll have to keep my eyes out for something like because I could use another table!

That makes for a nice deep work station. I have a filing cabinet like that but never knew it could come with a desktop too. Great find!

WOW great find!! I love that you feel good about abandoning a project you aren't happy with. Is it common to sew string blocks to a foundation?

Great thrifting find! Your discovery is helping me get into the mood to stop at some garage sales and thrift shops.I love seeing items that are used for a different purpose than intended. Your Featherweight looks happy on its new home.

Very cool desk and perfect for your featherweight.
So will you show us your 2 blocks? What if you made it with paper backing instead of fabric?

That wasn't by chance, Patriotic Pinwheels by Cheri, was it? I did mine already and really enjoyed it but it was rather bulky in the middle. Go to my primitives blog and find the post for May 11th of last year to see it. If you enlarge the picture, you can see the quilting.

Great little table!
