It is supposed to be almost 90 degrees here today. Not much like Christmas weather. Well, maybe for anyone in the lower hemisphere. I am participating today in the Christmas Sew Along. The second Saturday of each month is to be dedicated to working on a Christmas project or gift. You can see what I worked on in February here and March here.
Today I have selected a UFO to machine quilt. Here is a picture of the quilt top.
The pattern I used is by Jan Patek and Linda Brannock. I made the quilt top in 1997 and it has stayed this way ever since. I can give you two reasons for that. First of all, I hardly ever machine quilted anything at that time. The angels were fused on with a lightweight fusible product and then hand buttonhole stitched. This was before I knew to only use a rim of the fusible around the applique to keep the fabric soft and pliable. It becomes a problem to hand quilt through so much fusible otherwise. To just quilt around the angel made the angel puff out and I don't like that look on a bigger section of applique. I had made an extra angel and I don't remember why the extra but I hand quilted the background only on it.
On one angel, the puffiness was not so noticeable. And I had an angel to display. The priority of finishing the bigger quilt was not so pressing. I have thought many times of just giving away the bigger one as I have let the finishing go for so long. But I like it so well, I just could not part with it. Today I am going to tackle some kind of machine quilting on it and finish the piece. It will not be anything fancy but I hope to meet my goal.
See you all later.

There is no doubt in my mind that you'll meet your goal. :-) Sweet angels.
That looks like the perfect project the Christmas sew a long!!
I think it looks great but I understand what you are saying about it being too puffy if you quilt just around the outside. I'm sure whatever you decide, it will look great.
I love your angels. The colors are perfect. Have a quilty day.
I made this quilt! It's hanging up in our livingroom! I love your version. :D
The angels are wonderful, love them. Our taste in quilts is so similar, I love everything you make!
What a wonderful project to be working on.
I'm glad you are going to finish it! You've already put so much work into it hand button hole stitching all those shapes! It is going to be fantastic!
I so love these...just wonderful!!
I have my first machine appliqued quilt to still quilt. I found it while going through an old tote of fabrics. It was before there were different weights of fusible. Once I get it quilted, and it will have to be on a machine, it will probably be able to stand up by itself! LOL I love the angels!!!
I really love this top. It's going to look great. I am really interested to see how you quilt it.
Very cool! I haven't seen this pattern before...probably because it's from '97. I had barely started quilting then.
Good choice to finish the angels. I love the purple you used.
Great idea, the Christmas Sew Along.
Wonderful Karen ---I always love to visit and to see all your lovely projects!
:) Carolyn
Definitely a keeper---The angels talk to me. Remember it can be wrapped around a tree as a skirt, Tucked in a sled or thrown over a rocker--- Those angels definitely deserve to be shown off....Hope it turns off for you....
I love the angels, but I think the star border is amazing! I'd have to keep it too, I think!
Your header quilt is so charming, and I love the angel quilt. I hope you reach your goal of completing it today. It's so beautiful.
I really like what you do with folk art. Great work.
Ohhhh...LOVE this top! Hope you are making great progress on it!!
OooOOOoo..I really like that a lot, I'm a big fan of Patek and Brannock and purple!
Miss Speedy!! Adorable!!!
You have the best UFO's.
Everything you sew makes me want
to do it too. Your fabric choices
and everything just scream, MAKE ME, MAKE ME.
Such a cute and unique design!
I made that same error many years ago but it was only on a towel so I gave it away. I hope you succeeded in getting 'er all quilted up :0)
Crispy
Wonderful! I have had this pattern in my to do pile for years and years. I look at it often!
Great quilt, I love your angels and hope you are finishing it.
Happy quilting!!
This is another one of your gorgeous quilts, love it!
I totally understand your "pain" with the fusible stuff...been there done that too...wishing you only good things with the quilting...I'm sure it will be wonderful just as your others
Love the angels. What ever you do with the quilting I know will be wonderful.
Oh, I thought this one was mine :)!! Of course you know I love this, I guess I'll have to make my own (since I have the book). Can't wait to see it finished - it will feel so good!
