Why is it that cleaning and re-organizing my sewing room creates such a mess?
Hopefully the room will look a lot better when I get done. I know, I know! I have a big stash of fabric. I have known others with more. It is such a rewarding feeling to be working on a quilt project and to be able to find a piece of fabric within my stash that fits works just right. But I have made a decision that I need to make some pieced scrappy quilts this coming year. Since switching to doing more applique than piecing, the stash is not getting used up fast enough. That said, I do have some fabric on the way to go with a fat quarter bundle I purchased a while back. It is from Jan Patek's "Remembrance" line of fabric. My first fabric purchase in a while.
It is the Saturday for the Christmas Sew-Along but I don't know that I will have time to participate. The mess in the sewing room is calling.
"Silly Goose Quilts" is having a row by row free block of the month. It looks like it will be some applique and some piecing. Check it out.
And, if you did not see this link for a free block of the month by Dorothy Baker on Lucien's website already, be sure to check it out. A beautiful applique quilt pattern. Click here.
Red Brolly has a wonderful free Christmas stitchery sampler available here. And a second Christmas sampler stitchery here.
Back to the sewing room clean up.

I'm organizing my sewing room too. I don't know when you added the new header, but it's fabulous Karen! Have a good weekend and do some stitching. I will too.
I will never understand why there has to such a mess before there can be order - LOL I think your sewing room looks like a fun play room - I'm coming over. LOL
Have fun to don't forget to take a stitch or two.
Ha!It must be the time of year to be tidying the sewing rooms-thats what I am at today too-no where near as much fabric as you have though!:)
Shazy
Dito! I did this a few days ...now trying to keep it tity is another thing! Love your sewing room...can I come to play?
Carolyn :)
Oh my goodness, I just love your sewing room. It made me feel so happy to see that I am not the only one with tons of fabric. I also had to giggle at the temporary chaos. That's just the way it works, you have to mess it up a bit to reorganize. Please post pics when it is finished. I think it looks wonderful right now, mess and all! Thanks for sharing when it wasn't perfect! We can all relate!!!!! I love it!
Julie
That looks like my chaos. I finally just dumped everything out in the center of the room and started sorting. Once it looked all pretty, I started dragging strips out and now it looks like it did before I started. Oh well, LOL.
Creating order out of chaos first leads to increased chaos... but you'll get there!
Wonderful sewing room!
I want to come and play in your stash---it's totally fabulous and bunches of my most favorite hues and colors. :D Thanks for the BOM linkies; I'm going to go check them out. I need to make a doll quilt for Stitchin Therapy (?) tho. I also want to just cut some strips in different lengths/widths for scrap piecing. And the weather is GORGEOUS---I also want to be outside----so how about a little bit of ALL of it! LOL
Oh, I meant to tell you that I had to go and start that first block out of Birds of a Feather like you did...my living room looks like I've had a 'fabric explosion'...hubby is out of town so I dragged in bunches of fabrics to 'audition' for the birds. :D
I am drooling over that stash.
I was beginning to think no one else ever had a mess in her sewing room! I'm SO glad you posted these pictures - I feel sane again. Where did you get the cubby shelves? I've been looking for something like this.
It must be winter coming on that makes us want to tidy up. I've been working for a month and my studio cleaned up to look like yours! I have way too much stuff and not enough space. I keep stopping to sew. I justify this by saying that if I finish something, it won't be in the middle of the studio any more!!
Nice messy sewing room - I love it!! I don't want you to clean too much as you may get lost when you need something specific. lol It's funny, but when my room isn't that clean, I have a better luck to find the things. When it's totally nice and organized, I tend to have a problem to remember where the things are!
It will be so nice when you have it all organized. In the meantime we are enjoying all that lovely fabric :D
I'm with Darlene - I'll be over to play :)!! Good luck - don't get too distracted.
Oh I'm not sure you can ever have enough can you, lol - what if you need that one particular piece. Good luck on your project it will be nice when your done
Hugs - Karen
If doesn't matter where we live, we quilters are so much alike. Don't get too zealous, or you won't have time to create.
you do not have to justify your fabric, stash etc. I hope you enjoy your next creations
Forget coming over to play--I'm coming over to SHOP! That will help use up more fabric while you do your applique! : )
Can I please come shopping in your sewing room? I know I'd find everything that I want and love right there!
I know that I can work better when my studio is picked up and tidy. It's just keeping it that way...now that's the hard part.
Thanks for sharing the links to the free patterns and BOM's. There certainly are some beauties there.
Do you want me to stop by on the way home from West Palm to help you? I'll be leaving here at around 8:00!
I won't tell you how much fabric you have, grin. The reds look so inviting...
Yep, I'd say it is time to clean up. The next time I'm close to your place I want to come and play in your sewing room!! LOL
Love your stash storage unit...I would love to be able to sort the fabrics into colours like that.
Have fun Karen...it will be nice whe it's done.
Julia ♥
Fun fun links, thanks for sharing. I'm eyeing all your neutrals in that one picture. I never have enough neutrals.......
consider this: with the cost of fabric going up almost daily--you have managed to secure a wealth of high quality fabric in the colors you love. Use it & love it. No, I will not be brave like you & show you my vault of resources!!!
I love your sewing room just the way it is, the creativity, the fabrics the fun I can see just walking into that room!
Sometimes it is overwhelming having a stash but you cannot tame an artist that is continually at work, why tame the tools needed to create.
Now this is my kind of Quilt Shop...I 'er mean sewing room!! Your fabric is wonderful...all my colours...and is that homespuns...and flannels...and wool...Wow!! And I'd like to know..where's the mess??
P
I always say that the best quilts come out of a messy sewing room! Love to have your stash. Hugs
Looks like fun to me too!! Thanks for the links! :-)
Is that my room?? LOL! Hugs, Els
Your room is going to look wonderful! Love all your pretty fabrics, have fun!!
I keep starting and then stopping because someone wants his dinner and so on...and so on! But I too would love to come shopping in your sewing room!
It looks like you have just about enough fabric. Luckily there are new lines coming out soon to fill that empty space in your stash! Heehee. My sewing room can stay neat and tidy...as long as I'm not sewing! I'd rather be sewing, so you know how often it's neat. :)
All I noticed was the fabric lining your walls...no mess could I see....
Your fabric stash is to die for! I could easily "shop" there. I do agree...make some scrappy quilts because your applique handiwork puts me to shame!!! LOL Hugs!!!
What a fun post.
Thanks for the links.
LOVE your sewing room - sign of a very creative person. Yup, I'd like to come to play in that room!!
Karen, I hate to say it, but mine's much work. At least you have some clear floor space! And since I have no room to work to start cleaning, it's likely to stay that way, I'm afraid.
Hi Karen,
You have a wonderful space for your sewing. The only way to reorganize is to drag it all out and take a hard look at it. When you get through, you will be happy you did it.
Nice links to block of the month projects.
Hi, Karen. Don't think I've ever seen so many browns! To my way of thinking, anyone with a neat studio must not be doing a lot of quilting! All your quilts are beautiful, but especially liked your wool quilt.
best from Tunisia,
nadia
What a great room for stitching!
Can't wait to see the sewing room! It will be so much fun for you when you get it when you get it the way you want it. Thanks for the links to the BOM's - it is great to "go green" and work from your stash on new BOM's! Your Christmas quilt is wonderful and I love the quilt in your header - may I ask who the designer is? Thanks for sharing!
I'm loving your stash!!! Sometimes we have to make a mess first before we can really organize! LOL! :-)
I can't believe the stash, someone has a problem!!!! LOL. You could open a store! I'm only teasing, how wonderful to be surrounded with all that fabric. Excellent shelves too.
Oh THANK YOU for posting this! I can face my sewing room now knowing I am NOT alone!!! I came to visit from The Painted Quilt. Hope your room recovers soon!
I am right there with you . . . well, I am still just trying to get things out of boxes and find a true home for it after the move. I feel like we are closing in a little more each week. Can't wait to see your finish photos - I need all the inspiration I can get!
I don't see any mess...just lots of inspiration!
Love your open shelving too.
Ha ha.. mine looks like that too...:O))
Good luck with the organizing!!!
Your sewing room looks organized, compared to mine, ha ha. I love all the space you have, and wish I had the same. Mine is actually a sewing corner, ha.
enjoyed your post today - I need to get in mine and really clean, but even more reorganize.
I must be putting it off because I know it will have to be really bad before it gets better, lol.
It will be so nice for you when you are done!
I like all my stuff in plan view and at my fingertips. It's the only way I can find what I'm looking for. Your space looks really neat.
