QUILT INFO

I used an Electric Quilt applique design and modified it slightly to make this basket block.

BLACK IS NOT ALWAYS BLACK

On a recent quilt shop visit, I purchased these black fabrics.
They don't look very black in the picture and they don't look very black in person but they are blacks.  Brownish blacks.  I purchased these to make the quilt "Folk Art Blooms" by Buggy Barn.  You can see the whole quilt here.  There are two versions in the book.  One is dark and one has a light background.  Looking at the quilt picture in the book, I thought the quilt was done in dark browns.  Looking at the instructions, it called for different blacks.
It is very hard to select black fabrics online.  Some are blue/black, some have brown tones, grey tones, green tones, etc.  Hard to discern when looking at an online picture.  So off to the local quilt shop and paying full price.  I was happy to find a selection of blacks that weren't too modern looking and had the brown tones.  All but one piece came from the same line of fabrics.  Even a piece I thought would go from that line had a green tone and it did not look right with the others.

This is not a do it right now project but I had a chance today to visit the quilt shop.  Stay tuned.

  1. Oh blacks...they are so hard...that was one of the hardest fabrics to buy when I had the shop...the brown blacks are my favorites (no surprise there) That's going to be a wonderful quilt.

  2. I love brown blacks best and agree getting blacks to be similar is difficult. I like how they are laid out over your puzzle. Lol

  3. I love those fabrics and can see they would be very good fabrics to have on hand. The pattern is lovely. I find it very hard to find black fabric that I like as well and whenever I see one that I think I can use, I buy a couple yards.

  4. You've got a lovely pile of blacks. Blacks are very difficult to purchase in person; next to impossible to purcahse on line. I prefer brown blacks, as well don't care much for the blacks with green undertones.

  5. Sometimes black is a bit too harsh... so I am loving the softer dark brown-blacks you chose!

  7. I have noticed that too lately. It is had to determine the variations. It seems better to see them in person. The quilt you are going to make looks beautiful.

  8. I'll chime in and agree that blacks are tough to match. I'm making quilts for my grandsons for Christmas and in trying to match the black in the novelty print I realized all of my blacks were brown/blacks and this fabric had a very blue/black. Luckily the LQS (which always has their fabric at 20% off) was able to meet my need, but that isn't always the case where blacks are concerned. I can't imagine trying to match them online. Yikes!

  9. Same with reds. There are so many variations, you never know what you are going to get! Love that pattern ....

  10. I totally agree. But it's funny whatever color a person is trying to match becomes a challenge, blues, reds or blacks. That's why we have collections. So when we do need something we have it, when the trend has swung into a different direction.

  14. It's hard to pick fabrics online, I agree, you can't tell the tones at all. I much prefer to do it in person. I like the look of the quilt you're going to do!

  17. So true--I personally love the browny black fabrics. I buy them and then can't figure out which tote to put them in, brown, black, brown?

  18. Definitey, blacks are tough! And online, it's just a shot in the dark! But yours look great. Can't wait to see more!

  19. I am always picking up 'good' black fabrics - it's not easy to find nice prim blacks. So many are modern, Asian or musical in style. As a result my stash has a lot of black. Other colors are easy to shop for on a moment's notice *s*

  20. Your book looks like it will be fun to pick patterns that you like. I never thought of brown as black. I must check out those blacks/browns closer when I make my next quilt shop visit.
