Piece & Plenty Update

I made two more basket blocks for the "Piece & Plenty" block of the month quilt.  I am not keeping up with it like I should have been.

Now I will share with you a failure I had at making a floor cloth.  I used a Blackbird Designs pattern and was following their directions.  When I got towards the end, I had the stain ready to use but did not check the directions again.  If I had, I would have known to apply a small section of the stain and wipe it off before moving across the piece to apply more stain.  Instead, I applied stain over the whole piece and walked away.  When I came back to it, the stain was dry and made the piece too dark.  You can barely see the design I stenciled on the floor cloth.  I know of no way to salvage the project and it has stayed rolled up in the sewing room closet for ages.  I had intentions of starting from the beginning on another piece of cloth but needed paint.  I lost interest in the project all together.  I suppose I will donate the piece as is to the local church thrift store.  Maybe someone will think it is wonderful and take it home with them.  Have you ever made a floor cloth?  I had intended to use this on the dining room table.  A friend did one a long time ago from this design and I have admired it many times.

I am going to applique this evening.  See you later.

  3. Really nice applique on the basket with the flowers.
How frustrating to have been unsuccessful on your floor cloth. No doubt someone will find a use for it. Looks like it is a pretty design.

  4. As you've nothing to lose why not try reversing the dye by soaking it in water and bleach. I often bleach things lighter. Just remember to rinse in a mix of water and vinegar to counteract the acid in the bleach when it's light enough.

  11. Your blocks are absolutely beautiful--love them. I'ts so sad that your floor cloth didn't work out. I would test a small area with a little mineral spirits and see if that lightens the stain and doesn't ruin your painting--worth a try!

  15. So sorry your floor cloth didn't turn out. Since you aren't going to keep it anyway - I'd be tempted to use a paint remover on it to see if some of the stain could be lifted. If it works, it would be wonderful.

  18. The floor cloth is a great design... and I think that with today's prim popularity, someone will love it as is and maybe will even add some more "aging" to it and enjoy it in their home.

  21. I love your Piece & Plenty blocks! That background fabric has always been a favorite of mine but why I've never purchased any is a mystery to me. So sorry about the floor cloth but perhaps someone who likes the darker prim look would like it?

  24. Wow hon those quilt blocks are amazing - I really, really LOVE the background fabric, it just adds so much interest! Very swoon-worthy. I've never made a floor-cloth, although I do love to paint on cloth like that....it's too bad about it coming out too dark though.

  25. Karen, those are really gorgeous Piece and Plenty blocks! What a bummer with the floor cloth. I would have stuck it away for a long time, too. I'm wondering if Janet's idea has worked at all?
