The Buhl Bushong Quilt

I have started a new applique quilt.  I am participating in a sew-along using a pattern provided by the Virginia Quilt Museum.  The "Buhl Bushong Quilt" is  from the museum's collection of quilts.  The pattern is available as a block of the month download.  I have borrowed a picture of the quilt from the museum's Facebook page.  There is information about the pattern and sew-along at this location on Facebook.

Here is my first border section which is from the bottom of the quilt.  I found the applique stitching fairly easy to do. If the little curves on the pineapple flower scare you, just draw the pattern piece with a smooth line and let your fabric do the work.   I have not decided on how I will do the pieced blocks from the center.  I am thinking of doing a portion of the block designs with applique instead of curve piecing.

I hope some of you will join me in making this quilt.  And pay a visit to the museum if you are traveling near Virginia this summer.

Karen, Thanks for introducing me to this quilt! I’ve instantly succumbed and will undertake this adventure with all the others now flooding the VQM’s website after your post. I hope having the quilt presented over a spread out time period will reduce the sense of being overwhelmed at the size! Annie

Thank you so much for helping the Museum by creating early monthly preview Samples of your work and providing us with great exposure for the Sew Along!

Karen, I wonder if we could appliqué circles together, then cut them into quarters and appliqué them to the background squares, tucking those spikes underneath. Must explore this idea when I get the pattern.

You are off and running. I hope to start soon. But haven't decided on exactly where I want to head. I think we all need twice as many days per month. Your colors are lovely. Did you add in the pink?

A stunning quilt, Karen. The pineapple's wavy edge scares me. Could never attempt something like that--you did a great job!

Where or where to begin??! How do you find the hours? This will be a stunning quilt journey - I will follow along with great interest & wishing it could be part of my own quilting journey. The color palette you have chosen is perfect and that pineapple is fabulous.

I have the pattern and my background fabric. I plan to use stash for the majority of it. I hope to start the border today. Hopefully won't take too long. Then I will start the border for Benjamin Biggs. (Sentimental Stitches) I have all the blocks finished, just have to get them sewn together. Love applique!!
